Hillard Fowler

Hillard S.
Fowler, the son of Hampton and Amanda Fowler, born
about 1875, married Miss Bessie Warren and they
became the parents of five children. They lived just
outside the village on
the Glendale/Clifton road. “Hill” as he was known
and called, was a fine man, honest, kind and
compassionate. He was the card room assistant
overseer for a number of years. He was
appreciated by all who had the privilege of knowing
him. This writer came to know him as a real
Christian man, a member of the Glendale Baptist Church
who served his church well as a Deacon and active
member of the Men’s Bible Class.
The 1910
Spartanburg Township Census showed that he had been
married 14 years and was the father of 5 children, 3
living. The household was listed as;

Children;
George 11 Ella
3 Ruth 1 year,
1 month Martin
Fowler 28, brother
The 1940
Spartanburg County/Glendale Census listed the
household as;
Hillard Fowler 64, card room second hand
Wife; Bessie
60
Daughter, Mary Ruth Fowler Grubbs 30
Son in-law; Hampton Grubbs 34
Bessie Warren Fowler died at the age of 75, October
5, 1954.
Excerpts from the obituary of H.S. Fowler published
Monday, July 4, 1960;
"Hillard S. Fowler, 85, died at a local nursing home
Sunday after a long illness. A native of Spartanburg
County, he was the son of the late Hampton and
Amanda Fowler. He was a member of the Glendale Baptist Church
and the Woodman of the World. He had retired from
the textile industry.
Survivors were; two daughters, Mrs. W. A. Patterson
and Mrs. H. M. Grubbs, both of Spartanburg; one son,
George H. Fowler, also of Spartanburg; one brother,
N. M Fowler of Glendale;
five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services held at J.F. Floyd Mortuary with
interment following in The Greenlawn Memorial
Gardens, Spartanburg, S. C."

George Hampton Fowler Sr. married Ruby Berry.
They became the parents of three children; Mrs. Oren
Robinette Jr., M. Sgt. George H. Fowler Jr. and
Gerald Fowler.
George H. Fowler died in June, 1981 Ruby Berry
Fowler died in September, 1997.

Ella Fowler married William Alexander Patterson.
No records found showing that they had children.
William A. Patterson died at the age of 61 Wednesday
June 20, 1973. Ella Fowler Patterson’s second
marriage was to Creighton Slaughter. Ella Fowler
Patterson died in February, 1988. No other records
of Creighton Slaughter were found.

Mary Ruth Fowler married Hampton Miles Grubbs.
They became the parents of two children; Tommy and
Rebecca Grubbs. Hampton M. Grubbs died at the age of
78 in March, 1984. Mary Ruth Fowler Grubbs died June
27, 1999.
